Southern Methodist University: Online Master of Data Science
DataScience@SMU offers an online Master of Science in Data Science that provides flexible courses that give an edge to graduates looking for data-driven opportunities. The curriculum is a blend of classes from various schools at SMU with the coursework focused on statistics, computer science, data visualization, and a specialization in either machine learning or business analytics. Online classes are live on a weekly basis and will feature group projects and networking with other students.
Start times begin at four different times per year for flexibility to jump in at any time. With a workload of 33.5 credits to satisfy the degree, the program can take anywhere from 20 to 28 months to complete based on availability. To excel in the curriculum, students are expected to have a Bachelor's degree and three or more years of work experience in data analysis or management (otherwise GRE/GMAT scores will need to be submitted), along with college-level completion of statistics, calculus, and how to use and program with Python and R.
Rice University Master of Data Science
Students can complete this 31-credit program either online or on-campus. However, they need to apply specifically to the format they wish to take. In addition, a part-time virtual program is available. The courses include the core curriculum, specialization, electives, and capstone project. They specifically state that this is a non-thesis degree and the capstone project is geared towards providing students with hands-on experience in the field.
The on-campus section has one incoming class per year in the fall semester and consists of three academic semesters which can be completed consecutively (fall, spring, summer) or do an internship in the summer and finish their final semester in the following fall.
University of North Texas MS in Data Science
A Master of Science in Data Science can be obtained through the UNT Toulouse Graduate School. There are flexible options to have in-person classes at Denton, Texas, complete them online or a combination of both. 36 credit hours are needed to satisfy the curriculum. Core courses detail the fundamentals of data analytics, methods, and visualization. 15 credits worth of guided electives contain specific course material in big data, mining, business intelligence.
12 general elective credits have a wide range to meet specific student needs, such as cybersecurity, health research, and issues in the workforce with data and performance. Lastly, an internship or research project related to the field is needed. A research seminar can be repeated for credit as the topic varies in the course. Admission into the Graduate School requires official transcripts, at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and an application with a $75 fee.
