Online Data Science Programs in New York

Here are a few highlights on online data science degrees in New York.

City University of New York

The School of Professional Studies offers an online Master of Science in Data Science that gives students the tools necessary to enter the world of big data with an introduction in business education and data analysis with advanced programming methods. Students must complete these core courses along with three electives that go along with a desired specialization, such as finance, urban society and sustainability, and machine learning. The MSDS is geared toward job positions such as a data scientist, business intelligence analyst, and data mining engineer.

CUNY suggests that students have a Bachelor's degree with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Applicants do not have to be in a certain field to qualify for the program, but they must demonstrate basic knowledge in statistics and probability, linear algebra, programming (Python, Java, SAS, etc.), working with SQL queries (or at least two years with Microsoft Access), and analytics.

Rochester Institute of Technology

A Master of Science in Data Science can be obtained online through the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences. 30 credit hours are needed to complete the curriculum at RIT, which begins with a Data Science MicroMasters offered through edX and counts as 9 total credits. Courses offered through RIT are DS management, software engineering, applied linear models and regression, three electives in computing, math, and statistics, and a capstone project. Job opportunities after completing the degree have featured a senior data analyst at a marketing agency or policy advisor at an insurance company.

Part-time students can complete the curriculum in approximately four years. In order to be accepted into the program, a Bachelor's degree with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA is recommended. There must be knowledge in computer programming or the student will need to take courses to satisfy this requirement. Official transcripts, a resume, and two letters of recommendation should also be sent in with the application.
