Online Data Science Programs in Pennsylvania

Penn State University Online Master of Applied Statistics

The Penn State World Campus offers a number of data science programs that are completely online. A Master of Applied Statistics through the Eberly College of Science has a 30-credit curriculum, completed between two to five years, that is adaptable to many sectors, such as business, education, healthcare, and the government. Skills learned in the program include data mining and predictive analysis while becoming comfortable with software like R and SAS.

An MAS degree is split evenly between core and elective courses. Core courses include Introductions to Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Regression Methods, Analysis of Variance and Design of Experiments, and two statistical practicums. Recommended electives are all in statistics, but not limited to only this category -- 24 of the 30 credits must be statistics-based. Students must maintain a 3.0 minimum GPA.

Other Master's degrees that can be obtained through the PSU World Campus are in Geographic Information Systems and Professional Studies in Data Analytics (along with an optional Business Analytics focus). Graduate certificates in Applied Statistics and Business Analytics are also available, requiring 12 credits and 9 credits, respectively. A number of electives are available to customize the Applied Statistics certification, with subjects on SAS data management, R programming, sampling theory, and machine learning. The Business Analytics certificate has three required courses in business strategy, and predictive and prescriptive analytics.

Drexel University Online Masters in Data Science

This college offers a full program online for a Master of Science in Data Science. Skills learned toward a profession in this field will include the ability to gather and analyze data, figuring out trends and how to run a company more efficiently. Instead of semesters, the program is split up into four 10-week quarters, which gives more flexibility for students to take more or less courses at these times. 45 total credits are needed to satisfy the degree, and along with core courses, the following concentrations are available: Analytics, Mining, and Algorithms; Visualization and Communication; and Management and Accountability.

In order to be admitted into the program, a Bachelor's degree is needed, and those that do not have one in a related field -- computer science or engineering, for example -- may need to take prerequisites before starting the program curriculum. Other documents that should be submitted are an application, official transcripts, a letter of recommendation, a 500-word statement of purpose, and a resume.

There are two different online graduate certificates that can also be obtained: Applied Data Science (ADS) and Computational Data Science (CDS). Each program requires 15 credits with the same two core courses: Data Acquisition and Pre-processing, and Data Analysis and Interpretation. The electives for ADS focus on retrieving, organizing, and visualization, while CDS is geared more toward artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Temple University Online MBA

Another popular option for higher education in a related field is through the Fox School of Business, who offers an Online Master of Business Administration. This flexible format requires just three core courses before customizing the curriculum to tailor toward a student's need. Each course is five weeks long and can be taken once at a time, and students can complete the program between 20 months and 6 years.

Villanova University Online MS in Analytics

The Villanova School of Business offers a Master of Science in Analytics that can be completed 100 percent online. In the 11-course curriculum, students will take courses on R programming, business analytics, data management, and business intelligence. Everything culminates with an analytical capstone project that showcases what the student has learned. The program is geared to be completed within two years for part-time students and there is no ability to transfer credits or waive courses.
