A number of universities offer at least an online-focused curriculum in various aspects of data science, specifically in business administration. Professional experience is recommended for programs at Ohio University and Bowling Green University.
For a more traditional path toward data science involving the manipulation of data sets, Kent State offers a program that does not require work experience and can be completed in as little as one year.
Online Data Science Programs in Ohio
Kent State University Master of Digital Sciences
The School of Digital Sciences offers a Master of Digital Sciences with a concentration in Data Science that can be completed fully online without any trips to the university. There is an emphasis on data mining and machine learning while using various types up data sets (from structured to unstructured). The degree is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Required courses in this concentration are Enterprise Architecture, Data Architecture, Data Science, Semantic Analysis Methods and Technologies, and Knowledge Organization Structures.
To satisfy the requirements of the degree, 32 credits must be completed, which will take 12 to 16 months for full-time students and up to three years for part-time. There are three different opportunities each year to enter into the program, but full-time prospects can only join in the fall or spring. No work experience or testing results need to be sent in for admission, but the college recommends having a Bachelor's degree with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Scholarship Opportunities within Ohio
Bowling Green University offers various scholarships for some of their graduate degrees. An award for $12,000 in a school year is given by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for a teaching assistantship. Students entering into the Master of Science in Applied Statistics program are eligible and the school encourages women and minorities to apply. Everyone admitted into the Master of Science in Analytics program are automatically eligible for a department scholarship.
Kent State University offers the David B. Smith scholarship that recognizes high academic achievers with a minimum graduate GPA of 3.5 and is enrolled in a graduate program. One $500 award is given each year.
Data Science Careers in Ohio
Ohio is keeping up with its Northeastern states in the tech industry with nearly 400,000 employed according to CompTIA. That is the 10th-most employed state in the country and in terms of growth rate. The tech industry represents 7 percent of the workforce and 5.8 percent of the state's economy ($35 billion).
Leading tech job opportunities in the area are in software and web development and cybersecurity. IT services has seen 2.2 percent year-over-year growth. Average salary in the state sits at just over $74,000, which is similar or higher than surrounding states such as Michigan and Pennsylvania, but lower than much of the New England area.
Ohio University MBA
Through the College of Business, a Master of Business Administration can be completed 100 percent online and features a challenging curriculum but with a fully flexible schedule. The program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). 35 total credits are needed to complete the degree, 26 of those among core courses. Most classes are three credits with the exception of the Applied Business Experience, which is just two credits. The other nine credits come from three courses in one of the following concentrations:
- Business Analytics
- Executive Management
- Operations and Supply Chain Management
- Strategic Selling and Sales Leadership
- Business Venturing and Entrepreneurship
No GMAT scores are required to be admitted into the program, but it is recommended by the college to have a Bachelor’s degree, cumulative 3.0 GPA, two or more years of professional experience, a resume, and three letters of recommendation. For those who may not be ready for that, there is an online certificate that requires just three courses and they can be completed within a year: Introduction to Data Science, Data and Knowledge, and Data Visualization and Communication.
Bowling Green University
Accredited by the AACSB, the College of Business offers an Executive Master of Business Administration that offers a blend of on-campus classes with all coursework, classroom materials like lecture notes, and plenty of faculty and student interaction available through the Canvas management system. The program is structured to be completed within 21 months, and a unique aspect is how the class schedule is structured with four four-hour lectures during the weekend once per month. This provides flexibility to those who do not wish to stay on campus for an extended period of time.

Founded back in 2016, this conference began at Ohio State University and provides a platform for women to showcase their talent in the data science industry. Women are the focus when presenting innovations and their impact, but the conference is open to all professionals and researchers. Continuing to grow each year, the event has added staples like the Data Viz competition that awards the best data-driven visualization project. The top three finishers receive monetary compensation while all top five finalists obtain free passes to the event.
Data Is Beautiful – Cincinnati
Over 600 members have joined this Cincinnati-based group that holds monthly meetings at Datazar HQ. Activities include discussing the latest developments in data analytics and machine learning, professionals talking about their latest experiences, and workshops to fine-tune skills and abilities. Meetups generally tend to take place in the second half of the month.
