Online Data Science Programs in Maryland

Johns Hopkins University

There are two data science options to pursue online through the Whiting School of Engineering. One is the full Master of Science in Data Science. The school recommends that students have had prior work in programming, calculus, and discrete mathematics with a grade of B- or higher. There are prerequisite courses available prior to entering the MSDS curriculum. Only one course during the program can have a C-level grade that counts toward the degree.

In order to complete the program, 10 courses must be taken within five years -- seven core courses, one 625.xxx-level (Applied and Computational Mathematics) course, and two 700-level courses. The 700-level courses are the three numbers after the category number. For example, 605.xxx is the Computer Science category, and the numbers following are the course number. All foundational and required courses are available online, but only the following 700-level electives are:

Computer Science (605.xxx)

  • Large-Scale Database Systems
  • Advanced Machine Learning
  • Big Data Processing Using Hadoop

Applied and Computational Mathematics (625.xxx)

  • Introductory Stochastic Differential Equations with Applications
  • Theory of Statistics I
  • Theory of Statistics II
  • Data Mining

Another option is pursuing a Master's certificate, which is a condensed version of the MSDS. Six courses must be completed to satisfy the certification -- three in the Computer Science program and three in the Applied and Computational Mathematics program. At least two courses in each category must be a 700-level course, and all grades must be at B- or higher. Students must complete all coursework within three years.

University of Maryland University College

There are two Master's degrees and a graduate certificate offered by UMUC. The Master for Data Analytics requires 36 credits (six classes worth six credits each) to complete. There is an orientation that is required at some point around the first course, Decision Management Systems. The other courses are recommended in the following order: Data Management and Visualization, Machine Learning, Predictive Modeling, and Big Data Analytics. A capstone project culminates the degree, and all courses need to be completed within five years with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher.

The online graduate certificate, Foundations in Business Analytics, requires just three courses to complete. There is an orientation that is not worth any credits, than two courses worth six credits: Decision Management Systems and Data Management and Visualization. Courses completed in the certification can be applied toward a Master's degree. Students will learn big data and regression analysis, and they will work on large data sets using software tools such as SAS Enterprise Miner and Tableau.
