Online Data Science Programs in West Virginia

West Virginia University MS Business Data Analytics Degree

The state's biggest public university offers an online Master of Science in Business Data Analytics through the College of Business and Economics. Students will be able to learn various techniques in data mining and organizing databases. It is recommended that students have prior coursework in statistics and programming, but there are no specific prerequisites. The curriculum consists of 10 online courses, accredited by both the Higher Learning Commission and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Classes include Foundations of Business Intelligence, Ethics and Data Collection, and Business Simulation Modeling and Data Visualization.

Students can learn a number of programs in the curriculum, such as Python, R, Tableau, and Hadoop. A specific program for WVU is the GoFirst Cluster, which provides an education using secure cloud computing. In order to be administered into the program, students will need to submit an application with fee, a resume, up to three letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and GRE or GMAT scores unless they have at least five years of professional experience. Students can only gain entry into the program during the fall semester, and there are residency requirements at the Morgantown campus.

The Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering also offers a Master of Science in Software Engineering completely online through the WVU eCampus website. This program is geared toward professionals that are already established in the tech industry and are looking to advance their IT career. Students can opt to have just coursework in the curriculum, or complete a research project, or do a thesis. Salem offers a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science for undergraduates that are looking to break into data science or software development. Courses are completed either online or at their campus in Salem, and are offered in four-week increments. Students have the ability to blend both online and on-campus courses for maximum flexibility in their schedule.
